Sol LeWitt Readings
Wednesday 8 July 2020
Artifex Press and Paula Cooper Gallery invite you to a virtual reading of texts by Sol LeWitt, in celebration of the publication of Sol LeWitt Writings and Sol LeWitt Interviews by Artifex Press.
The event features five readers, all of whom have a close personal history with LeWitt, including two whose interviews with LeWitt are included in the volumes. Laurie Anderson, Lucinda Childs, Zoe Leonard, and Gary Garrels will each be reading interviews live, while Nicholas Baume has contributed a recorded reading of LeWitt’s writing.
Sol LeWitt Writings and Sol LeWitt Interviews collectively chart how LeWitt's artistic practice evolved over time, but also underscore the consistency of his thinking about his art and his conception of authorship. The texts cover a range of topics, from his teaching and relationship to the art world, to his theories of artmaking and of specific groups of work, most notably his wall drawings. The volumes were edited by Lindsay Aveilhé and Chris Vacchio and have been incorporated into the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné (Artifex Press, 2018). Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings is available free for registered users through the end of July 2020, as part of Artifex Press’s effort to provide access to its catalogues during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Sol LeWitt created his first wall drawing in 1968, he began a process of art making that has engaged dozens of artist apprentices and draftspersons over the past 50 years. Join us for a conversation on the practices of LeWitt drafters, the relationship between the drafters and the evolution of the works, and the future of LeWitt’s wall drawings. John Hogan, the Mary Jo and Ted Shen Installation Director and Archivist for Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings, is joined by Lindsay Aveilhé, Editor, Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné; Sarah Heinemann, Senior Studio Drafter; Karen Tepaz, Studio Drafter; and Chris Vacchio, Director of Research, Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing: Expanding a Legacy and in celebration of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, recently published by Artifex Press.

Session 4: The Catalogue Raisonné Process
A symposium hosted by Lund Humphries and Artifex Press in association with Chelsea College of Arts
On Friday 18th November, 2016, Lund Humphries and Artifex Press co-hosted a one-day international symposium on the importance, challenges and practicalities of compiling a catalogue raisonné, including the new publishing options afforded by digital technology. The event provided fascinating insight into the catalogue raisonné process from international experts with experience of a wide range of projects and on works in various different media.
